Timecode control vinyl, or timecode, is a specially recorded vinyl that is played on traditional turntables. The vinyl contains a recording of analog audio signals, also known as timecode. The audio output from the turntable, which is the timecode recording, is sent to an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). This ADC can be a multi-channel soundcard, a dedicated external USB or firewire audio interface, a DJ controller device, or a compatible mixer that is usually distributed with the software.

The ADC sends digital timecode information to the software, which translates the signal into changes in the playback speed, direction, and position of a digital audio file. The audio file reacts as if it were directly pressed onto the record. The manipulated audio output from the software is then sent back through the DAC or the computer’s sound card and can be routed into an audio mixer, where it can be mixed like any other analog audio signal.

The result is digital audio playback that sounds like the music is being manipulated by an analog vinyl recording. However, there is always a short delay between the needle’s reading of the timecode and the software’s playback of the audio. The delay time is an important factor for vinyl emulation products, as a shorter delay allows for better response and control of the music. The Traktor Control Vinyl MK2 has the lowest latency in the range.

Features of the Traktor Control Vinyl MK2 include being an excellent tool for scratch performances. It is lightweight, weighing only 24g.
