The Boss OD-1X is a pedal that takes overdrive to a whole new level. Unlike a simple reissue of the OD-1, Boss has decided to reinvent overdrive entirely. While most overdrive and distortion circuits have traditionally been analog, Boss recognized the potential of digitally processing overdrive and created the OD-1X. This innovative pedal can process each frequency band separately, allowing for a tailored effect on each. It also shifts its focus away from midrange, emphasizing bass and treble response, resulting in a modern and studio-ready feel.
One of the standout features of the OD-1X is its digital multi-dimensional processing. Unlike most overdrive pedals, which are fully analog, this digital processing enables the pedal to do much more, such as adding natural compression. This compression provides a smooth edge to the sound and ensures a polished, professional output. Boss specifically designed this pedal to be a modern overdrive, favoring treble and bass frequencies over midrange. Additionally, the OD-1X has a touch-sensitive dynamic response, further enhancing its natural compression capabilities. With these features, you can trust that anything you run through this pedal will sound studio-ready, as the OD-1X does all the hard work for you.
The OD-1X features a special edition design, offering a next-generation sound, feel, and response that analog overdrive pedals cannot match. Its real-time processing delivers rich and wide-range sounds with natural compression, while maintaining a bold and high-definition tone that is also smooth and refined. This pedal preserves the unique tonal characteristics of different guitars and pickup types. It also boasts low noise levels, even with high-gain settings. The Drive and High knobs allow for a wide range of sound shaping that is not typically found in stompbox pedals. In terms of appearance, the OD-1X stands out with its exclusive chrome knobs and control plate, as well as a vintage silver knob for easy access to the battery compartment.
The OD-1X incorporates Boss’ innovative Multi-Dimensional Processing (MDP), made possible through proprietary technology and custom DSP. Its specifications include a nominal input level of -20 dBu and an input impedance of 1 Mohm. The nominal output level is also -20 dBu, with an output impedance of 1 kohm. The pedal is designed to work with a recommended load impedance of 10 kohms or greater. It features controls for Level, Low, High, and Drive, as well as a Pedal Switch indicator. The pedal is powered through a carbon-zinc battery (9 V 6F22) or an alkaline battery (9 V 6LR61), or can be used with an AC adapter (PSA Series, sold separately). The current draw is 45 mA, and the expected battery life under continuous use is approximately 2.5 hours with a carbon battery and 9 hours with an alkaline battery. The pedal comes with an owner’s manual, leaflets, and an alkaline battery.
With a width of 2.875”, depth of 5.125”, and height of 2.375”, the OD-1X is a compact and lightweight pedal, weighing just 0.45 kg (1 lb).
