The Boss BD-2 Blues Driver was released in 1995 and is a relative latecomer to the Boss overdrive family. However, it has earned its place at the table due to its clever design features. The circuit of the BD-2 is an evolution of the OD-2 circuit and serves as the starting point for the OD-3. One of the unique design features of the BD-2 is the “fixed tone stack” network, which boosts the mids and bass while limiting the treble, mimicking the sound of old silverface amps. This allows the pedal to retain clarity and avoid muddiness even when the tone control is rolled down. Another notable feature is the boost stage with an op-amp that provides transparency and dynamic response.

The BD-2 has a flat to slightly scooped mid-range and can produce a sound similar to silverface amp breakup. At higher gain settings, it can also deliver fuzziness. On the other hand, the OD-3 offers slightly less gain but shares a flat midrange and decent bass response. It can be adjusted to sound smooth or crunchy depending on the settings. While the BD-2 and OD-3 share some similarities, they are different enough to justify owning both.

The Boss BD-2 Blues Driver boasts classic “blues” guitar tones with tube amp simulation. It responds to nuance and volume changes, making it a versatile tool for gigging musicians. The pedal features a basic three-knob layout that is easy to use, and its roadworthy design ensures durability on the road. It can be powered by an AC adaptor or a 9V battery.
