Instantly recognisable sound The original Dimension D introduced in the late 70s offered an ultra-simple solution to the problem of spaciousness in a mix. For many producers however it transcended its original purpose. The gentle and subtle swirling effect can transform a bland mono source into an exciting stereo sound filled with movement and density. Now available as a plug-in DIMENSION-D lets you experiment with processing just about any sound you can think of through the processor. Solo vocals can be made to sound like entire ensembles and brass and strings can be transformed from solo pieces to entire symphonies and thats just the beginning. Vocals naturally can take great advantage of a chorus unit especially background vocals. But lead vocals too can benefit from the extra dimension added by a good chorus unit. Weve already mentioned the ensemble sounds but keyboards in general can grow a lot with the addition of a chorus. Organs (of course – of any kind) but also pianos especially the electric piano. Longer delay values in the chorus effect can work well to create the illusion of a double performance and this takes us back to the solos (as in guitar solos) which may sometimes be “doubled” with a chorus unit. But you can use chorus pretty much anywhere and in many ways. Experiment extensively. Use your imagination! The original four-mode chorus Stripped back and simplistic Arturia Chorus DIMENSION-D models all four modes of the hardware original. Gradually raising in intensity each of the modes presents a different modulation rate to suit different requirements. New to the DIMENSION-D is the “0” mode what would typically be the bypass on the original has been repurposed for even more sonic variation. Mode 0 sends the audio through the internal compressor/expander circuit but bypasses the BBD circuit. This will result in a change in sound without the chorusing effect and is very useful for adding subtle professional polish to your sound. Moving to Mode 1 this has the least subtle effect with roughly half the delay times of the other modes making it ideal to be used as an always on effect for instruments such as vocals guitar or bass. Mode 2 increases the chorus intensity and creates a much more audible modulation than Mode 1. This mode can be ideal for adding movement to strings or synthesizer pads widening the stereo image and creating space in your mix. Mode 3 reduces the delay time in the BBD circuit but increases the LFO intensity pronouncing the effect even further. Lastly the “secret” switch which didnt exist in the original but could be found when all three buttons were pressed in. Mode 4 injects more wet signal to the output increasing the intensity of the effect by a gain increase suitable for whenever deep modulation is required as a creative effect. More control than ever before Careful not to overdo it Arturia has implemented a curated range of enhanced features that offer more flexibility than what was possible on the original hardware unit without interfering with the streamlined interface and workflow. Found in the Advanced drop-down panel DIMENSION-D includes four new controls; Oscillator shape dynamic colour width and mix. For contemporary producers and musicians these new additions present opportunities to explore more tones than where possible on the original while not taking away from the core sound of the hardware. Four Oscillator Shape switches let you alter the waveform of the integrated LFO to add different kinds of movement to the chorusing applied to your sound. Here you can find sine ramp sample and hold and sample and glide waveforms. Perfect for adding movement to static pads or background vocals. Four Dynamic Colour modes alter the behaviour of the internal compressor/expander sections of the signal chain altering the attack release and decay times. While subtle altering these could be the final piece of the puzzle to get your modulation just right in a mix. LF SAT 2/1 modes have shorter time constraints resulting in slighter higher saturation values. The Default switch adds no dynamic colour and maintains the sound of the original in its exact form. Lastly Smooth creates slightly longer time constraints for a more rounded and gentle modulation. Capable of being used in either mono or stereo modes depending on the incoming signal Arturia has added a simple Width control where you control the wideness of the stereo field. Often overlooked the Mix dial is a necessity for modern DAW-based producing. However you prefer to mix you can use the Chorus DIMENSION-D either as an insert or as an AUX send and set it to fully wet. The Mix control also allows for experimenting with parallel processing to blend in a small amount of your wet or dry signal internally.
