Every classic control and more Realistic reliable rotary controls. To those acquainted with rotating speakers the EHX Lester Ks range of features will be both familiar and a breath of fresh air. Switch between slow and fast rotation speeds by hitting the Speed/Brake switch once. Likewise slow the effect down to a full stop by holding the switch for more than half a second just as you would on the real thing. However the Lester provides modern versatility too with super-accurate control over the RPM of both the Slow and Fast spin rates which emulate the originals default settings at their 12 oclock positions. For a final level of high-end functionality the Lester K also features an expression pedal input for on-the-fly trem speed swells. Behind the Balance knob An EQ with history. On a pedal with a stereo output one might expect the Balance knob to control the comparative strength of the left and right signals. So why does the Lesters Balance act as a sweet-sounding resonant EQ control? The answer lies in the construction of a Leslie rotating speaker. Leslies contain two speakers. A high-frequency horn which physically spins at the desired speed and a bass woofer speaker with rotating baffle in front of it to create its signature Leslie swirl. Recording engineers would mic up these two outputs separately and it is the precise treble/bass blend which the Lester Ks Balance knob controls. From crisp and crunchy highs when fully clockwise to smooth rounded lows at its minimum theres a world of timeless tone at your fingertips. Full stereo satisfaction One trick engineers use when recording a rotating speaker is to place two microphones at different points in the rotation then placing these to the left or the right of the listener for a mesmerising “ping-pong” effect. Thanks to the Lesters mono/stereo output connections you can recreate this easily by sending the left and right signals to two separate amps or to distinct recording inputs which can then be panned left or right.
